The training within the framework of cooperation with Council of Europe was conducted in Shirvan

The next training sessions for lawyers have started within the framework of the joint cooperation of the Institute of Law and Human Rights and the Council of Europe Directorate General of Human Rights and the Rule of Law.

The training, held on September 12 in Shirvan, was on topic “Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). Court of Justice of Azerbaijan in the perspective of the European Court of Human Rights”.

The training was organized for employees of the justice departments, prosecution and judicial bodies, as well as members of the Bar Association.

The head of the Human Rights Training and Expertise Department of the Institute, member of the Bar Association, Vusala Muradkhanli gave general information about the activities of the Institute to the training participants and made an extensive presentation on “Article 6 of the ECHR: civil-legal aspect” in front of audience.  By commenting on the right to a fair trial from the point of view of the rule of law, the trainer emphasized the importance of practical and effective access to the court.  

In his presentation, legal expert of the Institute, Vafaddin Ibayev gave general comments on the following issues: violations identified in the decisions taken against Azerbaijan and ways of eliminating them; the right to appeal to the court; equality of parties in court proceedings and the principle of contention in court proceedings. He also touched upon such topics as the presumption of innocence, delay in the execution of court decisions and other issues.

During the discussions, the expert trainers explained to the participants the essence and grounds of the charges brought against the accused persons, gave relevant recommendations on providing the necessary time to organize the defense, equality in the examination and presentation of the evidence, and providing an interpreter for persons who do not speak the language in which the trial is being conducted.

The solution of the legal cases was carried out with the participants in groups, and the training was evaluated. At the end, 17 training participants were awarded with certificates.
