Institute research fellow held high position in Council of Europe

On December 4, 2018, elections were held in Strasbourg for the position of President of the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ), which is one of the most influential structural divisions of the Council of Europe in the field of justice and human rights protection.

By secret ballot of 47 member states of the Council of Europe, the representative of Azerbaijan, the head of “International Law” department of the Institute on Law and Human Rights of ANAS, doctor of law, judge Ramin Gurbanov was elected President of CEPEJ.

Since 2005, R. Gurbanov has been held various senior positions in this international structure. He was one of 6 experts and then Vice-President of the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice, member of the Bureau, as well as a member and head of monitoring groups organized in European countries such as Sweden, Estonia, Georgia, Cyprus, Slovakia, Lithuania, Macedonia, and Moldova.

The election to such a high position for the first time representative of Azerbaijan R. Gurbanov is a historical event. Note that since the creation of this Commission, the leadership has been occupied only by representatives of Western European countries: Germany, Italy, Great Britain and Austria.
