June 18 is National Human Rights Day

Today, June 18, is celebrated as National Human Rights Day in Azerbaijan.
By a decree of President Ilham Aliyev of June 17, 2007, and taking into account that the national leader Heydar Aliyev in 1998 approved the first “State Program for the Protection of Human Rights” and defined human rights as one of the main directions of state policy, this day was declared National Human Rights Day in Azerbaijan.
From the first years of the new century, the Azerbaijani state has been taking consistent measures to protect human rights, rights and freedoms. Having become a member of the Council of Europe, Azerbaijan joined the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights. At the same time, he pledged to improve national legislation in accordance with international European standards. The most important step in this direction was the creation of the institution of the Ombudsman.
The decree of President Ilham Aliyev “On the approval of the National Plan of Action for the Protection of Human Rights in the Azerbaijan Republic”, signed on December 28, 2006, states that strengthening efforts to strengthen the rule of law and protect human rights in the modern development of Azerbaijan is the main direction of state policy.
Accession of the Republic of Azerbaijan to international human rights agreements, creation of a research institute in this field, ensuring full compliance of regulatory legal acts with international human rights standards, improving legal mechanisms, further developing cooperation with human rights organizations, training specialists in the field of scientific research and education in international institutions and centers working in this field, compliance with human rights obligations and other issues are the main indicators of the importance given to human rights in our country.
Being the Institute of Law and Human Rights of ANAS, we also use these obligations to conduct research on the democratization of society, human rights and freedoms, prepare scientific recommendations, and at the same time, the institute studies and studies the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights enshrined in in the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international documents.
Thus, we can rightfully note that the "National Program of Action to Improve the Effectiveness of the Protection of Human Rights and Freedoms in the Republic of Azerbaijan" is a logical continuation of the human rights strategy founded by our great leader and the next political will of the state and guarantees the improvement of mechanisms for their implementation.
